The five-point star. A sand dollar carries a five-petalled pattern on its face, and these reproduce it in relief or cut through as openwork. That star is the whole design — a plain disc would not read as a sand dollar at all.
The legend. The five points are read as the wounds of Christ, and the doves inside a broken shell as peace, which is why sand dollars turn up as devotional gifts as well as beach souvenirs.
