What is a chain slide?
A slide has a channel or tube running through the back of it instead of a loop on top. The chain passes straight through that channel, so the pendant rides on the chain rather than dangling from it. The result sits flatter and closer to the skin than a bailed pendant, and it cannot swing around and end up facing backward.
What chain does a slide need?
The chain has to be thin enough to pass through the channel and flexible enough to lie flat once it does. Omega and herringbone chains are flat and rigid, so many slides will not take them — where that is the case the product page says so directly. A round snake, box or cable chain up to roughly 1.5 mm is the safe general answer, and the channel measurement is given on each product page so you can check against a chain you already own.
Can I wear more than one slide on a chain?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons people buy them. Several slides on one chain sit in a row rather than clustering at the lowest point the way bailed pendants do, so a group reads as a single designed piece. Start with an odd number and keep the chain long enough that they are not crowded.
Will a slide move around on the chain?
It can travel a little, which is normal and lets a group be spaced by hand. A slide with a longer channel grips more and stays put better than a short one. If a single slide drifting off center bothers you, a bailed pendant is the better choice.
How do I put a slide on?
Open the chain clasp, feed the free end through the channel from one side, then close the clasp. Nothing needs to be unscrewed or bent, and nothing on the slide opens. If it will not feed through easily, the chain is too thick — force will scratch the inside of the channel and can spring the tube.
