February's birthstone. Amethyst is quartz coloured purple by iron and natural radiation. It ranges from pale lilac to deep violet — the deeper stones were once as prized as ruby, until large Brazilian deposits were found in the nineteenth century.
Choosing a shade. Colour saturation matters more than size on an earring. A smaller vivid stone reads better than a larger pale one at conversational distance.
Caution. Amethyst fades with prolonged sunlight. Not an issue for normal wear, but do not leave a pair on a windowsill.
