The form. A cross combined with an anchor — the anchor cross of St. Clement, who by tradition was martyred by being tied to one and thrown into the sea. The lower arm becomes the shank, the flukes curve out at the base.
What it means. Hope and steadfastness, from the anchor of the soul in Hebrews. Early Christians used the anchor as a disguised cross, which is why the two forms combined so naturally.
Who wears it. Sailors and people with a life on the water, but also as a general symbol of holding firm.
