Who she is. Anne, the mother of Mary and grandmother of Christ. She is usually shown teaching Mary to read, which is why she is also the patron of teachers alongside mothers, grandmothers and women in childbirth.
When it is given. A first pregnancy, a new grandmother, or a daughter named Ann or Anne. The grandmother association makes it one of the medals most often bought within a family rather than for oneself.
Engraving. Several have a smooth back for a name and a date.
