The devotion. Mary as patroness of the Carmelite order, shown holding the brown scapular. The devotion dates to the thirteenth century and the feast falls on July 16th, kept widely in Italy, Spain and across Latin America.
The scapular medal. A medal may be worn in place of the cloth scapular — the substitution was formally permitted in 1910, which is why the medal form exists at all.
