The square and compasses. The central emblem, usually with the letter G at the centre. Designs range from a plain enamelled face to raised and stone-set versions.
Which way it faces. Convention varies by jurisdiction — some wear the points toward themselves, some outward. Lodges differ, so it is worth asking rather than assuming.
Signet form. Many are built as signet rings with a flat face, which is the traditional shape and takes the emblem cleanly.
Sizing. Most can be sized by a jeweller, though a ring with pattern work around the whole band is harder to alter than one with a plain shank.
