Where the color comes from.
Freshwater cultured pearls in any color other than white are dyed â that is the standard way the trade produces them, it is permanent, and it needs no special care beyond the above. Each product page states the treatment.
Cultured pearl and shell pearl.
A freshwater cultured pearl grew inside a mussel. A Majestik shell pearl is ground shell formed into a bead and coated, which makes it rounder, heavier and far more even in color â the reason a matched pair of colored studs is usually shell pearl. Each product page states which it is.
Nacre and luster.
Nacre is the only part of a pearl anyone sees â the layers the mollusc lays down around the nucleus. Thicker nacre gives the deep inner glow that separates a good pearl from a shiny one, and it is also what perfume, hairspray and chlorine attack.
Looking after them.
Pearls are soft, about 2.5 on the Mohs scale against a diamondâs 10. Put the piece on last, after scent and cosmetics, wipe it with a soft damp cloth after wearing, and keep it away from an ultrasonic cleaner for good.
Common questions
Are colored pearls real pearls?
The cultured pearls here are real pearls that have been dyed, which is how the trade produces freshwater pearls in any color but white. Shell pearl is a man-made bead of ground shell, and every shell pearl product says so on its page.
Will the color fade or rub off?
No. Dyeing a freshwater cultured pearl is permanent. What does damage any pearl is perfume, hairspray, lotion, vinegar and chlorine, which etch the nacre â so put the piece on last and wipe it after wearing.
Which colors do you carry?
