Two-tone and tri-color
The colours are real gold, not a finish. Yellow gold is alloyed with copper and silver, white gold with palladium or nickel, rose gold with a higher proportion of copper â so a two-tone bracelet is two alloys worked together, and the contrast will not wear off. Some pieces alternate colour link by link; others use a contrasting colour only on an accent or a clasp.
A note on rhodium: several bracelets are described as 14K with white or rose rhodium. Rhodium is a plated finish over the gold that creates the contrast, and on those pieces the underlying gold is the colour QGold lists as primary. The gold is solid either way.
Solid and hollow
Most pieces here are solid gold through the body. A smaller number are hollow or semi-solid, which gives visible width at less weight and less cost, at the price of being easier to dent.
Getting the length right
Measure your wrist with a tape or a strip of paper and add about half an inch so the bracelet drapes rather than binds. Seven to seven and a half inches suits most women; eight to eight and a half suits most men. A wide or heavy bracelet wants the extra half inch more than a fine one does. Looking after solid gold
Gold does not tarnish, so what dulls a gold bracelet is lotion, skin oil and soap film sitting in the links. Warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft toothbrush along the length, then rinse and dry flat. Chlorine is the one real enemy â it attacks the alloy metals over time and can make a link brittle, so take the bracelet off before a pool or hot tub. Store it laid flat or hung rather than coiled in a heap, which is what puts kinks in a chain.
