What is the difference between a solitaire and a halo?
A solitaire is one diamond on its own, and everything rests on that stone. A halo rings a center stone with smaller diamonds, which makes the center read noticeably larger and throws more light for the same total carat weight. A three-stone design sets a larger center between two smaller stones — often read as past, present and future. Pavé sets tiny diamonds flush into the metal so the surface itself glitters.
Which gives more sparkle for the money — a solitaire or a halo?
A halo, almost always. Spreading the same carat weight across many small stones creates far more facets and edges for light to bounce off, and the halo makes the center stone look bigger than it is. How do you clean a diamond pendant?
Warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft toothbrush around the setting. Skin oil is what dulls a diamond, and it collects underneath the stone where a cloth cannot reach. Take it off before swimming — chlorine attacks the alloys in gold, though not the stone. Store it apart from other jewelry; a diamond scratches everything in the box, including other diamonds.
