Sizing a child's bangle
This is the part parents ask about, and it depends entirely on how the bangle opens.
A hinged bangle swings open and clicks shut, so it only has to fit the wrist — measure around the wrist and add a little room. It is the easier of the two on a small child, because nothing has to be forced over the hand, and most here add a safety clasp so it cannot spring open in play.
A slip-on bangle is a closed circle and has to clear the hand. Tuck the child's thumb into the palm, measure around the widest part, and match that to the bangle's inside diameter. Sizing to the wrist is the usual mistake and the bangle will not go on. Inside diameters here run from about 40 mm for a baby or toddler up to 60 mm for an older child.
Adjustable and expandable styles are the practical answer for a gift, since you do not need the measurement in advance and they last through more than one size.
Engravable I.D. bangles
Many of these carry a flat plate made to be engraved — a name, a birth date, or a medical note. An engraved bangle is the piece a child keeps, and it is worth doing at the time of purchase rather than later, when matching the original engraving style is harder.
Why sterling silver for a child
Solid .925 silver, stamped, never plated base metal. It costs a fraction of gold, so a bangle a child may outgrow or lose is not a painful loss, and it holds its value in a way plated jewellery does not. Several pieces carry a rhodium finish, which keeps the surface bright and slows tarnish — useful on jewellery a child wears daily. Silver can also be re-polished and passed to a younger sibling.
Care, and a word on safety
Warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft toothbrush around the enamel and the engraving; dry fully and store in a closed pouch, which slows tarnish considerably. A silver polishing cloth lifts any that does appear. Take bangles off before a chlorinated pool. As with any jewellery for a small child, check the clasp regularly and supervise wear on very young children.
