What is the difference between a freshwater and a cultured pearl?
Every pearl sold today is cultured — grown in a living mollusk with a little help, rather than found by chance. "Freshwater" says where it grew: a river or lake mussel rather than a saltwater oyster. Freshwater pearls are usually all nacre, which makes them durable, and they come in a wider range of natural colors. Where a piece uses a shell pearl or a simulated pearl instead, the product page says so.
What color pearl should I choose?
White is the classic and works with every metal. Black pearls — usually a deep green-grey rather than true black — read modern and sit well against white gold and silver. Pink and brown are naturally occurring freshwater colors and warm up against yellow gold. There is no better or worse; it is a matter of what you wear it with.
Why is a pearl often paired with a diamond?
A pearl has a soft glow rather than a sparkle. A small diamond above it or beside it gives the eye a point of hard light to set the softness against, which is why so many classic pearl pendants carry one stone in the bail. The diamond is an accent; the pearl is the piece.
