Freshwater, shell and Majestik
A freshwater cultured pearl is grown in a mussel and is the pearl most jewellery uses — slight variation in shape from one bead to the next is normal and is how you tell a real pearl from an imitation. A shell pearl is made from ground shell, rounder and more uniform than a freshwater pearl and heavier in the hand. Majestik is a branded shell pearl with a thicker coating. All three take a warm white finish; the freshwater strands vary a little in tone along the length, and the shell strands are matched.
Size and fit
Pearl size is given as a range because pearls are graded in millimetre bands rather than cut to a size. Caring for pearls
Pearls are softer than any stone you own and the surface is what you are protecting. Put the bracelet on after perfume, hairspray and lotion, never before — alcohol dulls the luster permanently. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth after wearing and let it dry before it goes away. Never use a jewellery dip, an ultrasonic cleaner or anything abrasive. Store pearls in a pouch rather than loose in a box, where a harder piece can scratch them, and keep silver-safe strips away from the pearls themselves.
