      More about Crucifixes

Cross or crucifix. A crucifix is a cross carrying the corpus — the figure of Christ. A cross without the figure is a plain cross. That is the whole of the distinction, and it is the question customers ask most often. Both are worn devotionally; which one is right is usually a matter of tradition and of personal preference.

The forms. A crucifix can take any cross shape beneath the figure — Latin, fleur de lis, budded, mariner's, Eastern Orthodox. Some carry the INRI titulus, the small plaque above the figure bearing the inscription Pilate ordered placed on the cross.

Hollow and solid. Hollow crucifixes give a large silhouette at a light weight. Solid pieces have more presence and heft, and hold fine detail in the corpus better at larger sizes.

Sizes. From small charms through to substantial statement pieces. Bail sizes fit standard chains.
