The shapes they come in. A single open heart, two hearts joined or interlocking, a heart cut out of a band, and hearts worked into filigree or a knot. Some are plain polished metal; others are set with cubic zirconia or with diamonds.
What to know about the metal. Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and is often finished with rhodium, which is a surface treatment that slows tarnish and keeps the white color bright. Gold pieces are stamped 14K or 10K and guaranteed authentic — solid karat gold, never filled.
Giving one. A heart ring is the usual choice for an anniversary, a Valentine's gift, a promise ring or a sixteenth birthday, which is why several of these come in the smaller band widths that suit a stacking look.
