Most "initial necklaces" online are one pendant permanently attached to one chain. Ours are two real pieces: a solid 14K gold, 10K gold or .925 sterling silver letter, and a separately made chain in the length you want. You choose the letter style, the metal and the chain, and you can swap the chain later or add a second charm. Every letter is stamped for purity, never plated or filled.

Initial necklace questions

Which chain length should I choose for an initial pendant?

For most adults, 16 inches sits at the base of the neck, 18 inches sits just below the collarbone and is the most popular length for a single initial, and 20 inches falls a few inches lower. Men usually choose 20 to 22 inches. Children's lengths are 14 to 16 inches.

Will the chain fit through the letter's bail?

Yes when you choose from the chains we show here. Initial pendants have small bails, so the builder offers fine chains, 0.5 to 1.3 mm, on the For her and Unisex tabs and slightly fuller links, up to about 2 mm, on the For him tab, and it leads with spring-ring clasps that pass through every initial bail we carry. If you choose a chain elsewhere on the site, stay at or under 1 mm for a small letter.

Is the gold real?

Yes. Our 14K letters are 58.3% pure gold and our 10K letters 41.7% pure gold, each stamped for purity. Sterling silver letters are stamped 925. Nothing here is gold-plated or gold-filled.

Can I buy the letter without a chain, or the chain alone?

Yes. Every letter and every chain is its own product with its own price. The builder simply puts the right pair in your cart together.

How fast will my initial necklace ship?

Orders placed by 4 PM Eastern ship the same business day. Shipping is free within the contiguous United States on orders over $135, which most letter-and-chain pairs reach.

What if it is a gift and the letter is wrong?

You have 30 days to return or exchange unworn jewelry. See our returns page for the simple steps.
