Weight matters on an earring. Steel is lighter than gold at the same size, which is what lets a large hoop or a long dangle stay comfortable through a full day.
Sensitive ears. Surgical-grade stainless steel is far less likely to cause a reaction than plated base metal, where most nickel problems come from.
Finish. Steel holds a polish or a brushed surface indefinitely — it does not tarnish, so nothing needs cleaning beyond a wipe.
