      More about these pearls

      Where the color comes from.

Freshwater cultured pearls in any color other than white are dyed — that is the standard way the trade produces them, it is permanent, and it needs no special care beyond the above. Each product page states the treatment.

      Cultured pearl and shell pearl.

Freshwater cultured pearls grew inside a mussel and vary slightly from one to the next. Majestik shell pearl is ground shell formed into a bead and coated — even enough in color to match a pair of studs, which is why most pink earrings are shell pearl.

      Nacre and luster.

Nacre is the only part of a pearl anyone sees — the layers the mollusc lays down around the nucleus. Thicker nacre gives the deep inner glow that separates a good pearl from a shiny one, and it is also what perfume, hairspray and chlorine attack.

      Looking after them.

Pearls are soft, about 2.5 on the Mohs scale against a diamond’s 10. Put the piece on last, after scent and cosmetics, wipe it with a soft damp cloth after wearing, and keep it away from an ultrasonic cleaner for good.

      Common questions

      Are pink pearls dyed?

The pink freshwater cultured pearls here are dyed, which is the standard way the trade produces a pink freshwater pearl. It is permanent and each product page states it. Pink shell pearl is colored in manufacture.

      What is Majestik shell pearl?

A bead of ground shell, formed and then coated. It is rounder, heavier and far more uniform in color than a natural pearl, which is what allows a well-matched pair or a graded strand.

Can I wear pink pearls every day?

Yes, with the usual care — put them on after perfume and hairspray, wipe them after wearing, and keep them out of an ultrasonic cleaner. Pearls are soft, so they want a little more thought than a gemstone.
