White freshwater pearl earrings in solid 14K gold, as studs, drops and leverbacks.
Freshwater and cultured. Freshwater pearls are grown in mussels rather than saltwater oysters. They are more and come in a wider range of shapes, and modern cultured freshwater pearls are round enough that the old distinction matters less than it did.
Leverbacks. A hinged hook that closes behind the lobe — more secure than a wire, and the usual choice for a drop with a pearl on it.
Caring for pearls. Put them on last, after perfume and hairspray. Both damage nacre, which is the only part of a pearl anyone sees.
